Franco Sbarro is a legendary, if controversial, designer. He founded a Swiss-based high-performance replica and sports car company in 1971. He has designed numerous concept cars, most of them one-offs.
One of these was based on the Lotus 30, which Sbarro converted into a coupe. Little is known of this car other than the occasional photo from the day. Even the best website about Sbarro’s cars lacks any information. This car has a very distinctive look – the covered headlights are very reminiscent of other Sbarro cars of the late 60s – early 70s.
Perhaps the most info is found in this advert for the car. It lists an AC Cobra engine, ZF 5-speed transmission, alloy wheels, and a leather interior. It’s even left-hand drive! It was located in Switzerland when this ad was published. Where this car is today is anyone’s guess.
Which chassis was used to make it is a matter of speculation. It’s not unreasonable that it is 30/S2/3, as that car was delivered and raced in Switzerland. However, that car is presumed destroyed from a crash in Angola at the end of 1965. Perhaps the remains were brought back to Switzerland and converted into this one-off.
